Finding the right size of your running shoes is super important - but definitely not always easy.
Different manufacturers produce the same shoe size different in actual size. This means that you can be a size 39 in Nike, 39.5 in Asics and 38 in New Balance. Below, we have summarized our best tips on how to think when you feel unsure of which size you should choose for your upcoming runs.
How should your running shoes fit on your feet?
Fit and comfort are among the most important factors to make a good running experience. Your running shoes should fit comfortably in your heels, don't press too much on your achilles' tendons as well as enable enough movement for your feet to avoid the risk of chafing. Your midfoot should also be supported by the shoes, so look carefully for the right pair for you as some brands and models are wider than others. Keep in mind that the uppert part of the shoes shouldn't press too hard downwards on the front of your toes. This can cause discomfort and blue nails even though your shoes are the right size length wise.
Should your feet be able to move inside the shoes?
Most runners prefer to be able to move their feet slightly inside their shoes as it may otherwise create a sense of your foot being a bit trapped, especially since your feet will likely swell slightly when you run and get warm. A little extra space is always good, as long as your feet don't slip around.
What happens if you run in shoes that are too small?
If you choose a pair to small for your feet, you should definitely expect discomfort. The risk of blisters and blue nails are large and makes running anything but fun.
What happens if you run in shoes that are too big?
If your shoes are too big, it will probably result in the way as if they're too small - discomfort. If your feet slip around in your shoes, you will likely end up with chafing and blisters on your feet. If you're unsure about whether or not your shoes are too big, a good tip is to test run them indoors, ideally with a pair of socks that you usually (or plan to) run in. Tie your running shoes properly and go for a few test laps. Have in mind that as soon as you've run in them outdoors, it's no longer okay to return them, so spend a few minutes trying them on before you're ready for your first run outdoors.
go for a few test laps!
Before you decide to head out on your premier round, a good idea is to first take your new running shoes for a few test laps indoors. Get a feel for them, do they feel comfortable?
So... What size should I go for, then?
The safest way to know is without a doubt to try them on since brands and manufacturers often produce the same size differently. If you have ordered shoes from a certain brand before, it is often a safe choice to go with the same size as your previous order. The sizes can however sometimes also differ between shoe models within the same brand, so it's no guarantee.
A good tip before you click home your next pair:
For many of all shoe brands available at Sportamore, there is a size guide provided. We recommend using this before your purchase to eliminate the risk of buying the wrong size. If there is a size guide available for the brand you're interested in, you'll find it at the product page of the shoe you might be thinking to get.
