Why your child should play in running shoes
Be kind to your children's feet and make outdoor play extra fun with a pair of running shoes. Experts explain why running shoes are as important for children as they are for adults.
Everyone who runs, sports and plays needs good shoes, it's been around for ages. The reason it is especially important when it involves a child is because children's feet are still developing and the wrong shoes at a young age can cause problems later in life. Proper running shoes are therefore a must for children who practice running. They can also be an alternative to the shoes that many kids have for preschool and outdoor play.
- "Just like for adults, it is important to choose the right shoes for the right activity, and if you have children who practice running as part or as the main part of their training, it makes the training more fun and more effective," says Agne Karlsson, product expert at Saucony.
Is it better to play in running shoes than a pair of sneakers?
- It definitely can be, depending on how much the kids run. A flat, built-up sneaker does not provide the same support and build-up as a good running shoe, just like senior models. Shoes designed for running are more flexible, supple and durable than sneakers can be, making them ideal for very active children with lots of running in their legs.
Should children wear inserts in their shoes?
- Generally speaking, I think that the foot should be strengthened by mobility and exercise, without inserts. However, if children have overly mobile ankles and get pain when walking, it can be helpful in some cases.
What are the similarities between adult and children's running shoes?
- Saucony's kids and adult shoes have the same drop, all to promote good foot placement with less impact. The Kinvara is a lightweight shoe with a 4mm drop that is perfect for quick runs and indoor training. The Ride has an 8 mm drop and is a very good quantity training shoe that kids can wear when playing outdoors or walking to school.
How do children's running shoes differ from adult running shoes?
- Children's running shoes have slightly lighter materials in the midsole and upper, and less shock absorption. This is because children put less stress on their shoes as they weigh less than an adult. This is also the main reason why adults with small feet should not buy children's shoes.
