Should I run in underwear?
Can, should or must I wear underwear when running? There are many models and materials to choose from, all suitable for different types of exercise. Malin Caron at Craft explains.
Running in the winter months is pretty much like running in the summer, except that you need to remember to wear non-slip shoes and warm running clothes. Something that many people forget is the base layer. The main advantage of putting on a base layer as the first layer during your run is that the garments are soft and flexible.
- They are simply comfortable to wear under other garments! In addition to comfort, base layers also transport moisture away from the body so that you do not get wet or cold when you run, says Malin Caron at Craft.
We already know that different materials suit different types of activities. When it comes to underwear, the models are usually categorized as synthetic underwear, wool underwear or a mixture of the two materials.
- Right now, for example, merino wool is very popular!
Underwear for running in winter is a good idea. If the temperature is low, just wearing regular tights and your thin running jacket is not enough, another layer is needed. Active Intensity is an innovative base layer collection that keeps you dry and comfortable during intense training in medium to cold temperatures.
Which base layer is suitable for which type of exercise?
- Wool base layers are great for walking and non-physical activities. Wool warms very well, and also cools. But if you're running or doing another sweaty activity, you're better off with a synthetic base layer, because it doesn't get as warm as wool. What's more, wool retains moisture, and can actually retain up to 40% of its own weight. "Synthetic fiber does not absorb moisture," says Malin Caron and adds:
- "There are thinner synthetic base layers for high-intensity training and thicker synthetic base layers for those times when you need more warmth. I recommend seamless base layers, they are great. They often have different knit sets strategically placed where you need the most warmth - or more mesh for heat regulation - with no chafing seams.
What kind of base layer should I wear if I'm hiking or walking?
- If you're hiking, wool base layers are definitely best. You may not be walking very fast, it's windy, and you're taking breaks for food and coffee. Wool warms you when you are stationary. But if you're running, cycling or doing any other sport that makes you sweat, synthetic underwear is the best choice any time of the week.
