iSpike - ice is just another surface! With the success of the award-winning Trail5 behind us, we set out to create a counterpart for winter running. A shoe that would handle everything that Trail5 does but also give you comfort and security when you run on icy trails or packed snow. To realize this, we teamed up once again with our Italian friends Vibram, who is a world leader in performance outsoles for outdoor and trail running. Salming iSpike's upper is made of a durable, lightweight ripstop nylon with a soft and comfortable mesh interior that keeps the heat even in low temperatures. The outside of the upper part is deliberately sparse so as not to attract snow or ice that can melt or create chafing. At the front of the big toe is a reinforced surface - IceShield - made of durable PU with a microfiber on the inside. The lacing is fully integrated with an ExoSkeleton ™ in the form of nylon straps on each side of the foot that holds it in place and creates stability and comfort. Combined with Salming's Wool Sock, with its ergonomic fit and naturally warming wool - you are ready for your winter running round. The outsole is developed with Vibram's new revolutionary LiteBASE technology, which provides the opportunity to work with a completely different, thinner and lighter outsole construction that minimizes weight by as much as 30% compared to a standard construction. The technology comes with Vibram's famous and popular Megagrip rubber, which we also used on Salming's award-winning Trail5 shoe. A material that is characterized by durability and tackiness, which provides excellent grip on wet, muddy, slippery surfaces but also on dry rocks. Integrated in the outsole are 13 extremely durable tungsten carbide tip nails, which dig into the ice surface, or the packed snow, to ensure a good grip but work just as well in mud and forest terrain. To prove how good the grip actually is, we took iSpike to the most extreme of ice conditions - an ice hockey rink. Feel free to look at www.salmingrunning.com to see more. The point is, if the shoes work to run on clean freshly washed ice, they work in winter conditions in the forest as well.
