Why you should exercise with your partner

Exercising with your partner is healthy, according to a Sifo survey compiled by watch manufacturer Garmin.

For the second year in a row, Garmin has compiled the so-called Fitness Report - a survey that uses statistics to show that exercising with your partner seems to be successful. A full 38 percent of the Swedish population chooses to run, work out or go to the gym with someone they like - a girlfriend, boyfriend or family member.

- "I think most people feel that it's a stressful existence - there's work, shopping, cleaning, hobbies, personal time and then there's exercise and the need for couple time. Therefore, I believe that more and more people experience the benefits of exercising together with their partner, says Marcus Bjärneroth, Director of Public Media Relations from Garmin Nordic.

In Sweden, 73% of people have managed to make exercise an everyday activity, and the fact that as many as one in four people choose to do it with a partner is a sign that it works.

- I believe that routine is the key to most things if you want to create sustainable change, so whether it's exercise, work or hobbies, routine is a major success factor. Therefore, it will be easier to train with your partner than alone.

The combination of couple time and exercise is clearly a recipe for success if you don't want to lose motivation, but why a partner?

- I think everyone finds it wonderful to spend time with someone they like, and perhaps especially a partner they like a little more. Also, we are all good at different things and can help each other. One person may be better at running and can give tips on it, the other may be better at technology and give tips and show how technical aids work.

Technical aids are actually another key to successfully maintaining an exercise program. As many as 67% of the Swedish population feel that exercise becomes more enjoyable with measurable results.

- Technology without benefit has no value in itself, but technology that adds benefit is generating a lot of interest. A watch nowadays does so much more than just keep track of the time. It measures differences in altitude, stress, rest, recovery and so on. With so much added value, it simply makes exercising more fun and stimulating," says Marcus Bjärneroth and concludes:

- "Here you can advantageously use a smartwatch that you synchronize with your partner's daily calendar. In this way, you get the routine started and create the change you want to achieve.
