Trendspotting: Here are this season's ski trends
Silhouette and durability are key when it comes to trends on the slopes. Here are the tips that will help you score top fashion points - whether you're on or off-piste.
Padded skiwear or the three-layer principle - no matter what type of garment you choose to wear on the slopes, there are always a few trends to consider for the fashion-conscious. We asked the experts at Peak Performance to find out what the hottest style on the slopes is.
What are the current trends in ski wear?
- For women, the silhouettes that stand out from the crowd are the winners, such as a longer jacket with a tighter pair of pants. Patterns are also growing into skiers' wardrobes, with much of the inspiration coming from the fashion world. The color palette may be paler pink, blue and orange, which becomes a more sophisticated colorful look, says Mårten Bergkvist, Global Digital Key Account Manager at Peak Performance.
What are the trends for men?
- On the men's side, different membranes, such as Gore-Tex, are stronger than ever. Patterns are not as hot as on the women's side, but a little camo here and there doesn't hurt. The color palette is classic red, blue and orange, with a few touches of beige, moss green and black.
So the focus is on membranes and function, why is that?
- "Function is becoming more and more important, regardless of the skier. Previously, it was mostly the really keen skiers who focused on it, but now it applies to everyone. More people are asking the question "how do my clothes protect me against wet, wind, cold and weather changes?". This means that the layer upon layer principle is also stronger than before," he says and continues:
- "Tour skiing (skiing without a lift), where the focus is on adventure, has grown strongly in recent years and this makes functional garments all the more important. On the other hand, padded ski wear is still a favorite for the broad mass of skiers.
Do function and trend cancel each other out?
- "Function meets form" is something we Scandinavians are used to. And it's exactly what the rest of the world now values in their trend choices. So the answer is clearly that they just complement each other right now. "Sports fashion" is the term.
A ski jacket in a classic red tone is a stylish choice on the slopes.
How do I know which model of ski jacket to wear?
- Longer jackets for freeriding and shorter ones for the piste are something that really stamp the type of skier you want to signal that you are. If the products are also DWR-free or somehow durable, it is extremely crucial in the purchase decision.
Do you have any other tips on how to be the trendiest on the slopes?
- In terms of style, we go back to blocky and colorful where the jacket and pants should go tone in tone. Dare to mix stronger colors with more muted natural colors, it's definitely a winning combo.
Do trends really matter on the slopes?
- Absolutely! It's more on the map than ever before. It also means that there are more expressions than in many years, which is really exciting!
Find the right style on the slopes:
Start from where you are on the mountain. On the piste: Tighter pants, shorter jackets and more warmth involved such as down jackets. Use a mirrored lens on your goggles and you can take a coffee or go for an après-ski when the weather changes.
On the off-piste: Longer jackets, looser pants and three layers on your body. Use an avalanche backpack and make sure you have several lenses for your goggles so you are prepared for changes in the weather.
On the summit tour: It's important to have more room for a change of clothes, gear and snacks in your backpack. The products with the most functional solutions are the winners. A pair of glacier pants is a must, even when the weather changes.
